Ostiya Review?
A student who goes by the handle @feignedflowers on Twitter from the Ateneo de Manila Senior High School tweeted an “Ostiya Review” of the consecrated host they had ‘stolen’ or ‘smuggled” during a school-wide mass on March 17, 2023.
The now-deleted tweet starts with “OSTIYA REVIEW: MARCH 17 MASS.” The student rated the sacred host a 6 out of 10 for design, an 8 out of 10 for crispiness, and mentioned that it was “not soggy and had a satisfying crunch,” a 7.5 for the taste, to which he added, “tastes like corn flakes,” a 7 out of 10 for the “wow factor,” calling it “decent,” and finally, they gave it an overall rating of 7.1 out of 10.
In a message posted by the Campus Ministry Office of Ateneo Senior High School (ASHS-CMO), which has since been taken down but was reposted by News 5, the office said that there would be no more Holy Masses in the Senior High School department until the “Rite of Reparation for the Profanation of the Holy Eucharist” was done.
The student’s behavior is described as “sacrilegious” in the memo, which states, “Sacrilege is a grave sin committed against sacred persons or things, particularly those consecrated to God. In the Catholic Church, it is an offense against the holiness of God and His Church.”
“The Eucharist, the source and summit of our Catholic faith, is the most sacred and central act of worship for us. Therefore, any act that shows disrespect, irreverence, or contempt towards the Eucharist, or any other sacred object is considered sacrilegious,” they added.
The student reportedly apologized for their tweet. However, netizens shared their outrage and thoughts on online platforms such as Twitter and Reddit.
One Redditor said, “Foul. If he doesn’t believe in God, just don’t do something that’s really offending for the believers. Just let them be.”
“Ako na ingat na ingat sa banal na ostia pag tatanggapin ko na, isip ko baka mahulog o liparin bago ko maisubo. Isinapuso ko na ang ostia ay bahagi ng katawan ni Kristo at patunay na tinatanggap ko Siya sa aking buhay. Kakasad mga ganitong kabataan. Mema lang,” said Twitter user @akosiyngel last Saturday.
