Happy International Theatre Day!

Patuloy na mabuhay ang sining!

With our rich history that heavily involved different art forms, Filipinos have always had and continue to have a strong penchant for the arts. These include our heavy inclination and interest with theater. Beginning with the zarzuela, over the years, Filipino stage performances have evolved but always continue to bring not only the entertainment and joy, but the talent, passion and message these stage plays or musicals offer.

This international theatre day, here are 4 musicals and stage plays Filipinos can watch!

Among them are one of the most popular musicals, ‘The Sound of Music’ which came to Manila recently and ended their run yesterday, March 26. However, there are still plenty shows for Filipino fans to catch this season!

1. Walang Aray Musical

One of this generation’s leading loveteams KD Estrada and Alexa Ilacad take the PETA stage as they give life to Rody Vera’s reimagining of the Severino Reyes classic zarzuela, “Walang Sugat.” Portraying the roles of Tenyong and Julia respectively, the “modern” take to this zarzuela set in the Spanish colonial era, features their love story.

The show had a successful opening night last February 17 and will have runs until May 14 where you can catch KDLex perform 12 out of the 40 shows!

2. Ang Huling El Bimbo the Musical 2023

After being made available to watch on Youtube during the pandemic, many fans hope to be able to catch the live shows of the highly-acclaimed ‘Ang Huling El Bimbo the Musical.’

AHEB the Musical will bring back the Eraserheads fever on stage at the Newport Performing Arts Theater this April.

3. Nekropolis

Running at the Tanghalang Ignacio Gutierrez at the Cultural Center of the Philippines from April 14 to 30, ‘Nekropolis’, an original play co-written by Guelan Varuela-Luarca and directed by Charles Yee, is an explores death and power of the past six years.

4. ZsaZsa Zaturnnah the Musical… ‘Yun Lang

Running from March 17 to April 2, Kim Molina is ZsaZsa Zaturnnah for its return at the Ateneo Blue Repertory.

The iconic red-haired superheroinne and LGBTQ+ took flight at the BlueRep under the direction of Missy Maramara, stage adaptation by Chris Martinez, and music, lyrics and musical direction by Vincent A. De Jesus which gave the Carlo Vergara graphic novel a new adaptation.

Truly, Filipinos never run out of stories to tell or retell that thankfully we have the theatre to help share these to everyone.
