The new trailer for ‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ left everyone SHOOKT
In the film’s final trailer, it was revealed that Voldemort’s infamous snake/Horcrux, Nagini, was originally human AFTER. ALL. THIS. TIME.
WTF!
The story - which takes place 70 years before Harry Potter’s - gives an origin tale to Claudia Kim’s Nagini, who is portrayed as a circus performer who has the ability to transform into a snake.
And while Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling claimed that she planned this surprise twist all along
Only for around twenty years. https://t.co/gZadgWVREN

People took offense at the fact that Nagini was portrayed as Asian
Some were disgusted with the twist, as it basically meant that an Asian woman was a pet of a white male throughout the entire series.
I have no words for how disgusted I am by the whole Nagini thing. To have a creature depicted as no more than a beast revealed to be a PERSON, a WOMAN, is bad enough, but for her to specifically be an East Asian woman?
Bad look. Bad fucking look.

Throughout the HP books, Nagini's role is a pet and an object (horcrux) to white man Voldemort. She died as an object, just like how the other horcruxes were destroyed. What makes you think it's okay to cast an asian woman in that role,

Broke: Asian women as love interests for white male protagonists.
Woke: Asian women brainwashed, transfigured into a giant snake and kept as a pet/slave for 60 years by white male antagonists, then decapitated by a teenager.#FantasticBeasts #nagini pic.twitter.com/mkNA6wniD9

One saw it as a poor attempt at including People of Color (POC) to the Harry Potter universe
The fantasy series, while loved by many, was often criticized for its cast’s lack of diversity.
I feel like this is the problem when white people want to diversify and don't actually ask POC how to do so. They don't make the connection between making Nagini an Asian woman who later on is the pet of a white man. So I'm going to say it right now. That shit is racist.

Does this mean I now hate Harry Potter? No. I still love it. But let's make it clear. Harry Potter is problematic AF. So let's discuss it now so that our future generation of writers who create the next blockbuster books and movies can do better.

However, others argued that Nagini was never treated like Voldy’s servant in the books.
Instead, she was more of his right-hand man…woman… snake. I’m confused.
Nagini was never just ‘a pet’ for Voldemort. These SJW need to reread the books and see how much Voldemort values her, above all of his followers, even Bellatrix. Stop with the racism card already it’s tiring. Sheesh.

This is my feelings regarding the nagini issue: when I read the books, never ever in my life thought that nagini is a slave. Nagini is voldy’s right hand like a vice pres to a president. He trusts her like a comrade. His only comrade.

What do you think? Is there any weight to this debate?
