Is “the design is very…” the new “forda”?

There’s a new phrase on the lips of Filipinos on the internet, and it’s amusing as it is confusing (for those who don’t know where it came from).

If you’ve been very online lately and up to date with all the memes, you might have seen the line “the design is very…” across comments sections.

For instance, when Netflix and other media pages shared the poster for upcoming film Chupa, netizens left comments like “the design is very Vivamax” and “the design is very vastos.” But it wasn’t because the poster looked lewd or whatever—in fact, it’s a very wholesome image of a boy and the mythical chupacabra—it’s just a way people are generally describing the vibe of whatever they see online.

Where did it all start?

The meme got popular through a Chinese TikToker, @humg….0, who posted videos of using weird contraptions to solve minor daily problems in 2021. He would describe his quirky inventions with the phrase, “The design is very human.”

The line spread more online, going beyond describing the weirdest creations. Netizens have even used it to describe current hot topics like the drama between Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber, as well as the beef fans have with James Reid, Issa Pressman, and Yassi Pressman.

And of course, internet users have used this meme on K-pop idols.

And that’s how people have been using the meme online, to describe the vibe of something. Have you been bitten by the “the design is very…” bug?
