Food discourse, especially on Filipino Twitter, isn’t unusual, as it happens regularly. From Angkong vs. Dimsum Treats to the best milk tea house in the area, the Internet actively answers these so-called controversial takes with their opinion. And two big fast-food chains in the Philippines, Jollibee and McDonald’s have fallen victim to this never-ending discourse.
Filipinos are known to be food lovers. In a survey by YouGov, they collected data from over 25,000 participants in 24 countries, and one of its findings was how Filipinos were most likely to enjoy food from other countries.
We asked 25,000 people in 24 countries how much they liked 34 national cuisines. Here are the top 5:
1. Italian cuisine – average of 84% in each country who have tried it say they like it
2. Chinese – 78%
3. Japanese – 71%
4. Thai – 70%
5. French – 70%

“It’s Filipinos who are the most likely to appreciate international cuisine,” wrote Matthew Smith, lead data journalist of YouGov. “An average of 67 percent of Filipinos who had tried any given cuisine said they liked it, with only five types of food being liked by fewer than half.”
This survey just proves that Filipinos are foodies, and they eat whatever they want to their stomach’s desire.
The nth time the “Jollibee vs. McDo” discourse trended on Twitter was last night, March 28. It started with user auntieselinamo’s tweet sharing their preferred fast-food chain based on their menus like fries, spaghetti, burger, chicken, sundae, and pie.
Jollibee or Mcdo
Fries – Mcdo
Spag – Mcdo
Burger (Burger Steak) – Jollibee
Chicken – Mcdo
Sundae – Mcdo
Pies – Jollibee— Auntie Selina (@auntieselinamo) March 28, 2023
The tweet alone has 353.8K views and counting, with 708 quote retweets giving their preferred taste.
“Mcdo for me mas masarap sa kanila ang chicken at fries,” One user replied, gaining 7 likes from other users agreeing with the tweet.
“Jollibee or Mcdo trend? Mas masarap pa rin kapag libre!” Another user tweeted, gaining 6 likes and 4 replies agreeing with the funny banter.
Filipinos may like to discourse about anything and everything, but one thing is for sure. This food discourse may become controversial to some, with other people not accepting any lashings towards their favorite comfort food, but it just proves that Filipinos are food lovers, and this is all just for the laughs in the end.
