On Claudine Co and TikTok Mean Girls: Women, stop validating misogyny

Although it may not seem like it, sometimes misogyny comes from women, too.

Internalized misogyny sometimes even comes from the smallest comments, too.

Women already received so much shit daily, it’s way past the time we should all stick together instead of tearing each other down.

Misogyny as per definition by Oxford Languages is the ‘dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women.’ and it is more often displayed by men. But, women can be prejudiced against other women too, through Internalized Misogyny. Defined by the University of Missouri Kansas City Women’s Center, as women subconsciously projecting sexist ideas onto other women and sometimes even themselves.

Recently, two acts of internalized misogyny have been policed by the Internet.

Claudine Co called out for objectifying BLACKPINK member Jennie

In one case, was by a local vlogger named Claudine Co, who initially posted a vlog about the recent BLACKPINK Born Pink concert in the Philippine Arena. What initially was a vlog recounting her experience, was later on called out by not only Blinks but many on Twitter.

Her viewers noticed how she made a comment objectifying BLACKPINK member Jennie. In a now-deleted part of the vlog, she said “siya din nag-enjoy sa singit ni Jennie. Medyo na-zoom in niya naman nang onti.”  referring to her boyfriend who was sat beside her. He then just laughed and brushed it off, saying “kakainis.” nonchalantly. However, Co did not stop there and added, “na-zoom in naman niya yung singit ni Jennie so ok na siya.”

Since then, the vlogger has reuploaded her vlog while removing the part the Internet called her out for and has written an apology through her Instagram story, saying that she sincerely apologizes to everyone she has offended, especially to BLACKPINK’s fandom, the Blinks. She also said that she does in no way support sexual harassment.

However, it is important to note that even jokes like these that aren’t initially intended to harm anyone, are actually still rooted in internalized misogyny. Looking at women as objects, wherein men can zoom in on their body parts for their own satisfaction, should definitely not be made into a joke, more so specifically coming from a woman herself, too. Instead, women should be protecting other women from harm such as this.

Two girls made fun of TikTok influencer Jackie La Bonita for taking pics at a baseball game

In a viral video, TikTok influencer Jackie La Bonita gained the sympathy of the Internet, including rapper Cardi B herself. The influencer recounted in the video how she was simply minding her business, taking pics at a game until she noticed the girls behind her were mocking her.

In a part of the video, one girl even raised her middle finger, gave her a side-eye, and proceeded to say “Laaaameee.” Jackie was getting self-conscious as she could hear the two girls talking about her.

The Internet was in full support of Jackie, saying she was beautiful and to not mind those rude girls behind her. Cardi B even quoted a now-deleted tweet about the video saying “I would of put that ring to use.”

In this day and age of social media, it is not a new thing to see people take pictures or videos for content or even personal use even in public spaces. If they were not comfortable being seen in the pictures, they could have just not looked Jackie’s way or simply turned around for a while.

There was absolutely no need to ruin someone else’s self-confidence by being unnecessarily rude to the video, giving her the middle finger and even laughing about her loudly. What’s worse was they were women, too, who did all that to bring down a beautiful woman just feeling good about herself and her outfit.

Let people do their own thing.

At this point in time, women should be sticking together and protecting each other, being the only ones that can relate to the everyday struggle of being victims of sexism and sexualization, at the office, school, or even at home, and many more.
