Mabuhay ang Pilipinong litratista!
Filipina photographers Hannah Reyes Morales and Kimberly dela Cruz were among the 2023 World Press Photo contest winners under the Southeast Asia and Oceania categories.
30 professional photographers earned prizes from the contest, with awardees from the Philippines, China, Germany, Ukraine, and South Africa. This year was the 66th iteration of the World Press Photo showcase.
Morales’ photos, titled “Home for the Golden Gays,” featured the community of LGBTQ+ in Manila for elderly and homeless gays. It’s been published in international publications like The New York Times under the “Stories” category. Her work has also been in The Washington Post, National Geographic, and Al Jazeera.

In 2020, she won an Infinity Award for Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism from the International Center of Photography. Morales was also commissioned to photograph for a 2021 Nobel Peace Prize exhibit.

Meanwhile, Dela Cruz’s winning “Death of a Nation” captured the Duterte administration’s controversial war on drugs. Her work, which fell under the “long-term project” category, showed the bloody scenes and victims of the families of the killings.

Dela Cruz also worked with the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism to create the children’s book on the 17-year-old victim of the drug war, “Si Kian.”
