It wasn’t a good morning on Umagang Kay Ganda when host Anthony Taberna blamed a rape victim during the show’s episode last Feb. 19.
Taberna blamed the 19-year-old victim for meeting with someone who she’d been chatting with online.
‘Yon and problema, ‘yon ang mabigat sa lahat,” he adds.
Spoken word artist Juan Miguel Severo couldn’t stand idly by as Taberna’s words echoed far and wide the nation, only contributing to perpetuating rape culture.
We deserve better than statements that normalize the boys-will-be-boys mindset. Rape doesn't happen because victims put themselves in vulnerable situations, rape happens because rapists rape. pic.twitter.com/sMU03j7Dbl

UKG‘s official Twitter account replied to Severo’s tweet stating that they are “addressing the matter.”
Thank you for your feedback. Umagang Kay Ganda values comments from its viewers and we have called the attention of Anthony Taberna on the concern you have raised. Rest assured, we are addressing this matter.

The pvblic called him out on it:
'Boys being boys' is not an excuse to rape. Anthony Taberna's comments that victim blame rape victims are one of the reasons why rape culture is prevalent, now more than ever. His sexist remarks/comments on his female co-anchors are also wrong. As a viewer, he turns me off.

anthony taberna i don't know ur official twitter handle, u seem to have several. but i hope u read this. RA 8353 or the Anti-Rape Law of 1997 DOES NOT mention circumstances to blame a rape victim! that's the legal side of it. On the moral side, u are a misogynist and an asshole! https://t.co/hmOZSyNg54

Please, someone tell Mr. Anthony Taberna that it is NEVER okay to blame the victim of sexual assault, let alone rape. Tell him it's the rapists' fault for the lack of decency and respect. I AM APPALLED. #AnthonyTaberna

Tito Sotto, Joey De Leon, Noli De Castro, Ted Failon, and now, Anthony Taberna.
Media personalities who has blamed victims for the things they never wanted to happen to them.
They were never punished for their statements, kaya nauulit ng nauulit.

Others commended Canoy for correcting Taberna:
whoever said “dapat yung blame talaga eh dun sa mga lalaki” i want to give him a medal i also want to give anthony taberna a middle finger up his nose

Hello @ukgdos please tell Anthony Taberna that he basically said that girls can’t go out and drink with guys but it is totally okay for boys to be rapists and you can’t blame them for BEING RAPISTS. kudos to Taberna’s co-host Jeff Canoy.

Taberna apologized for his remarks, saying he would never side with a rapist.
The damage is done and I don’t think a sorry is going to make everything better. Never put the blame on the victim. Period.
