P20 coin is a finalist in the world’s ‘Best New Coins’ award

Remember the famous tagline that goes, ‘Hanggang saan aabot ang twenty pesos mo?’ Well, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) revealed that the P20 New Generation Currency (NGC) coin is among the three finalists for the Best New Coins award at the International Association of Currency Affairs (IACA).

The bi-color P20 NGC coin is competing with Mexico’s 20 Pesos commemorative coin and Kazakhstan’s 200 Tenge coin. The finalists were selected from 20 central banks’ 39 nominated projects, three commercial banknote issuers, nine suppliers to the banknote industry, and one banknote distribution system.

The new legal tender that will soon replace its banknote version was officially launched in 2019, featuring former President Manuel Quezon on the obverse side and the BSP logo and the alacañan Palace and Nilad Plant on the reverse side.

IACA is an organization that aims to provide an international exchange for consultation and collaboration on matters of interest to stakeholders in the cash payments cycle. Its currency award, which launched in 2007, advocates and recognizes “excellence in banknote and coin production, processing, management, distribution and related activities of the cash community.”

The winners under Best New Coin or Series Category in the Excellence in Currency 2022 Awards will be announced on Feb. 22, 2022.
