They say laughter is the best medicine, and by golly, they’re right.
World Laughter Day is an annual event which is celebrated every first Sunday of May. It aims to raise awareness of laughter and many of its healing benefits since it started at Los Angeles in 2005.
If you didn’t know yet, laughing relaxes the whole body. A great laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for about 45 minutes.
It boosts your immune system, meaning it decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, being a great resistance to disease.
It also triggers endorphins which are the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. It gives you an overall sense of well-being which can temporarily relieve pain.
Laughing your butt off protects the heart. It’ll improve the function of blood vessels and increase blood flow which will keep you from having a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.
Laughing can lighten your load on life. It’s a nice way of diffusing anger. It can put problems into perspective and it’ll help you move on from confrontations.
It could even help you live a bit longer than expected. Study shows that people with a strong sense of humor outlive those who don’t laugh as much. It was notable for those who battle cancer.
Oh, and it burns calories. Laughing for 10 to 15 minutes can burn over 40 calories!
