Another one for the fans

With OG animator Hayao Miyazaki hard at work with the ongoing development of the purely hand-drawn Studio Ghibli film ‘How Do You Live?’, it seems that the animation house has more in store for its fans sooner than expected.

A new previously-secret film titled ‘Aya and the Witch’ will be released in Japan’s NHK channel this December after its Cannes Festival premiere was cancelled amidst the Coronavirus pandemic.

The new film is based on the 2011 Diana Wynne Jones children’s novel ‘Earwig and the Witch‘, which follows an orphan girl who has been adopted by a horrible witch named Bella Yaga.

Equipped with her sharp wits and a quirky talking cat (Ghibli seems to love those), the young girl must plan her survival in the witch’s supernatural home.

Meanwhile, Ghibli is no stranger to Jone’s works as they previously adapted 2004’s Howl’s Moving Castle from the author’s 1986 book of the same name.

‘Can Aya and the Witch do well after corona? I thought about that many times when I was watching the early footage,’ shared Ghibli co-creator Toshio Suzuki on the studio’s decision to release the film via TV.

‘Then I realized the big characteristic of the movie is Aya’s wisdom. If only we have wisdom, we can overcome anything in any era. When I thought about that, I was relieved.’

In the meantime, we can catch other Ghibli greats via Netflix
