Per THR, Spider-Man is officially leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Sony and Marvel Studios failed to reach a new deal regarding the rights to use the character.
The fallout comes after Sony – who owns the Spidey franchise – refused to give Disney (Marvel Studios’ parent company) a bigger share of future Spider-Man movies. Marvel is only entitled to five-percent of the box-office gross, including merchandise revenue.
The end of the Sony/Marvel deal will also likely mean the exit of Tom Holland from the MCU – a massive blow for the franchise, both from a financial and storytelling perspective.
The latest entry in the series, ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home‘, recently grossed more than a billion dollars at the box office, and touted the webhead as the MCU’s next central character, following the exits of Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Chris Evans (Captain America).
