People are uninstalling Shopee for its collab with Toni Gonzaga

No more, ‘sa shopee pee pee pee‘ for other people

The “Ber” months are usually booming for online shopping apps thanks to the looming holidays. However, Shopee might be getting a colder reception than what they had in mind.

The popular app is under fire after teasing its newest celebrity endorser, which the Internet immediately recognized as Toni Gonzaga. The TV host is the subject of criticism by those who oppose President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr, whom Gonzaga campaigned for in the 2022 elections.

The actress, whom the opposition labels as an “enabler,” shares close family ties with Marcos Jr. The latter served as the godfather at the former’s wedding with director Paul Soriano. Soriano is also the nephew of Marcos Jr.’s wife, Liza Araneta-Marcos.

During a proclamation rally of the Marcos-Duterte slate, Gonzaga also introduced House Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta, a major player in the denial of ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal. The closure of Gonzaga’s former network led to the loss of thousands of ABS-CBN employees.

Online shoppers have either threatened to stop their support for Shopee or have uninstalled the app entirely. Some sellers also decided to pull out their products from the platform.

Another criticism is Shopee’s decision to downsize its workforce a few days prior. The Singapore-based company will reportedly let go of some of its Philippine employees to “optimize” its business. Some argue that paying what can be assumed is a hefty talent fee is insensitive in light of the layoffs.

But as the old saying goes, “There is no such thing as bad publicity”. As Shopee becomes the top trending topic for its controversy, so does its direct competitor, Lazada. Disappointed users have either pledged to migrate to the app, or deal with business owners directly.
