ICYMI, Singapore’s iconic Sentosa Merlion statue will be demolished to make way for Sentosa Sensoryscape, a$90 million project to expand the infrastructure of Resorts World Sentosa. The monument will be open until October 20.
Due to public backlash, a change.org petition with 297 signatures as of writing is gaining traction to stop the demolition, emphasizing the monument’s status as a ‘pride of the nation‘.
‘The Merlion at Sentosa is a National Icon, it was the pride of the Nation. This monument shares many fond memories with Singaporean kids in the 90s when our parents bring us to visit it.’, the petition reads.
Singaporeans and tourists alike have also expressed disappointment with the demolishment:
Completed in 1995, The Sentosa Merlion is Singapore’s tallest Merlion statue standing at 37 meters high. The half-lion and half-fish figure is also the country’s official mascot and one of their most popular tourist attractions.
