‘Recess’ live-action review: Nostalgia overload

*Minor spoilers*

The gang returns

T.J., Vince, Gus, Spinelli, Gretchen, and Mikey are finally back together in ‘Third Street‘, an unofficial live-action Recess film. Teased back in July, the flick has finally debuted following a successful crowdfunding campaign back in August.

Third Street, which is set years after the OG show’s middle-school adventures, sees our childhood heroes facing high school and all the drama that comes with it.

Staying true to the genre’s time-tested cliches, we spend the majority of the runtime with the gang as they try to console Mikey, who just got his heart broken by the 1/3 of the Ashleys, Ashley A.

But even as director Jerome Yoo opts for the familiar trope, the movie more than makes up for it with the nostalgic journey alone. It’s a 12-minute homage to Recess lore, filled with easter eggs that will have true fans eliciting a few ‘ooohs’ and ‘aahs’, such as Kelso’s and Winger Dingers.

Repeated viewings of Third Street are also recommended, as you’ll prob spend your first run through comparing the cartoons to their IRL counterparts, while also second-guessing a few unfamiliar faces.

With an ending that leaves room for a sequel or even a spin-off series, here’s hoping Third Street is just the first chapter in this much-awaited revisiting of a childhood classic.

The Ashleys with Randall the OG snitch

A fan film only in name, Third Street brims with authenticity to deliver a proper tribute for fans of the OG Disney series.
