No rest for the…?
You’re not alone, insomniacs. According to a recent study by sleeping app Sleep Cycle, PH is one of the most sleepless countries in the world.
The chart found that PH’s nightly sleep generally lasts under 6 hours and 45 minutes, ranking us the 3rd lowest in Asia just before South Korea and Japan.
The results aren’t all that shocking, considering the country’s traffic situation where the average commuter is expected to spend 9 to 15 years of their lives stuck in traffic. Filipino employees are also spending more hours in the office than they’ve ever had in the past 15 years.
Leading the chart is New Zealand with almost 8 hours of sleep, while European countries (green dots) evidently have a good track record when it comes to catching Zzz’s.
Meanwhile, Japan is at the bottom of the list with less than 7 hours of sleep, coinciding with the term Karoshi or ‘death from overwork‘ where Japanese workers literally collapse from fatigue due to excessive work hours.
But the maximum 7 hours still doesn’t suffice, as studies say that adults need an average of 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night. Aside from a feeling of weariness, lack of sleep also leads to medical conditions like obesity, heart disease, and even shorter life expectancy.
So PH, let’s get some rest
