After the glitz and glamor of the Golden Globes has simmered down, comes the pomp and prestige of the Oscars as nominations were announced Thursday morning.
Leading the pack is early favorite, The Revenant with 12 nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor for its lead, Leonardo DiCaprio (will it be his year?).
Others nominated in the Lead Actor Category are: Bryan Cranston (miss Breaking Bad) for Trumbo, Eddie Redmayne (gunning for a back-to-back win #MissColombia) for The Danish Girl, Matt Damon for The Martian and Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs).
The next most nominated Best picture nominee is Mad Max: Fury Road with 10 nominations.
Other films competing under this category are: Bridge of Spies, Spotlight and Carol (all with with 6 nominations), Brooklyn, Room, The Big Short, and The Martian (with 7 nominations).
Perennial favorite Cate Blanchett is once again nominated for the movie Carol. And speaking of favorites, Jennifer Lawrence bags her 3rd Best Actress nomination with her performance in Joy. The three other women contending for the coveted Oscar on February 28 are Brie Larson (Room), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Charlotte Rampling (45 Years).
Rooney Mara who was expected to be nominated in the same category with co-star, CateBlanchett is surprisingly nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Joining here are: Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), (finally!) Jennifer Jason Leigh for The Hateful Eight, the always present Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs), and former mean girl, Rachel McAdams for Spotlight.
On the supporting actor category, we have Christian Bale (The Big Short), Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight), Tom Hardy, Mark Ylance (Bridge of Spies) and a welcome/surprise nomination for Sylvester Stallone for the movie Creed.
Expect a lot of heat from those who think more notable performances were snubbed (of course, what else is new? we are just superlatively happy that Inside Out is nominated and a sure winner) and that this year’s competition is pretty much wide open, no clear front-runner this early.
Cheers to the nominees! Award ceremonies will be held at the Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on February 28, to be hosted by the always edgy and relevant, Chris Rock.
