Progressivity on its way
OG animated channels Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network have shown their support for the transgender community during yesterday’s #TransDayOfVisibility with posts from their social media accounts.
Nickelodeon tweeted out a transgender flag with words of encouragement for transgender people to continue to ‘live their truth’.

‘Cartoon Network celebrates you being authentically you 💖💙 #TransgenderDayofVisibility,’ CN meanwhile captioned on Facebook along with a heart featuring the transgender flag colors.
The network has also long shown transgender solidarity through shows with LGBT themes such as ‘Steven Universe‘ and ‘Adventure Time‘ – an important facet in normalizing modern relationships for their young viewers.

Meanwhile, although it’s important that big companies show progressive stands, we ought to remember that the real spotlight needs to be on those fighting every day to live their truth.
Our very own transgender Filipinos have long been targets of discrimination, not only through despicable catfishing, but also through numerous violence and harassment cases rooted in misinformation. Remember Oplan X-Men?
Anti-discrimination laws solely for the LGBT community have also been proposed in PH to, unfortunately, no avail. At this rate, we should make a point to show solidarity through being allies ourselves.
