The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has launched a pair of space tech that’s set to get to the bottom of things on Mars.
Meet ‘SHERLOC‘ (Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman & Luminescence for Organics & Chemicals) and his trusty camera sidekick ‘WATSON‘. The pair are tasked to work together to deduce rock surfaces and map out possible minerals on the Red Planet.
Based on the well-loved detectives from Arthur Conan Doyle, the instruments will be onboard NASA’s Perseverance rover exploring the surface of Mars. NASA seems to be legit fans too, as SHERLOC even dons a modern magnifying glass similar to the series.
‘For the most promising rocks, the team will command the rover to take core samples, store and seal them in metal tubes, and deposit them on the surface of Mars so that a future mission can return them to Earth for more detailed study,’ the agency shared.
SHERLOC and WATSON will be working with 6 other instruments on Perseverance, as the mission’s ultimate goal is to prepare humans for Mars exploration in the near future.
Meanwhile, Perseverance and its tenants will launch between July 17 to August 11 this year, with an expected Mars landing on February 18, 2021.
