In a totally un-totalitarian move, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) wants to apply its current rating system on streaming platforms like Netflix and Apple TV.
Typically shown at the start of PH shows and movies, MTRCB’s ratings range from G (General Audience), PG (Parental Guidance), SPG (Strong Parental Guidance) R-16, to R-18.
‘The difference is, of course, [U.S.] law is different from us… So we told [the streaming sites] that they should adopt our rating system.’ explained MTRCB chairperson Maria Rachel Arenas.
Senator Win Gatchalian agreed with the provision, using the Netflix-released movie ‘Eerie‘ as an example of a film that could romanticize suicide and mental illness.
‘We don’t want to aggravate the situation by allowing films that can inadvertently create issues on mental health without the proper warning to parents or guardians.’, Gatchalian furthered.
With Netflix and Apple TV on their watchlist, there’s no word yet if other sites like Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, and 123movies.to will get the MTRCB treatment.
