In case you missed it, Liza Soberano tearfully bowed out of her ‘Darna’ role, citing a lingering injury as the cause. Liza’s withdrawal has opened the floodgates for suggestions on who could play as the iconic heroine, ranging from Nadine Lustre to Kapuso actress, Sanya Lopez.

No more Liza Soberano for Darna. Come on, let's it give it to either Nadine Lustre or Maymay Entrata — morena pinay beauties all the way! ❤️

If it’s not Angel Locsin (again), it has to be Nadine Lustre. Other personal preferences: Sanya Lopez.
Matti-Locsin was promising, but hey, you can’t have too many nice things. #Darna

Divided as the picks may seem, one thing remains clear: The pvblic wants a Morena Darna to happen, and based on the top mentions, they most likely won’t accept anyone else.
Given the people’s massive expectations, casting an actress who doesn’t fit the bill of the so-called ‘authentic Filipina beauty’ will almost certainly generate tons of backlash, both for the studio and the actress herself. And tbh, this sort of mentality has been a long time coming.
We wanted darna to have darker skin and bit of wavy hair in contrast to the original look. Marvels ms. Amerika and ms…
It was a few weeks ago when Jem Bernaldez’s rejected concept of a morena Darna went viral and sparked a trend called #SigawDarna, wherein artists shared different reimaginings of the heroine.
And while the designs and backstories were varied, these Darnas were all noticeably brown-skinned, meant to capture the image of the average Filipina.

Darna was never really a big part of childhood. It was just something everybody knew about cuz she's an iconic Filipino superhero. But seeing a bunch of artists doing their own renditions, I couldn't help but share my own version.#SigawDarna pic.twitter.com/Xiag0m04Wz

So will this movement convince ABS-CBN or whoever’s in charge to cast a morena for their new Darna? Hopefully, it will. And for a superheroine who’s supposed to represent everything that makes a Filipina unique, it’s probably for the best.
