The night is dark and lacking in context
The Philippines is the social media capital of the world, so it’s no surprise that memes and artworks are playing a massive part in the upcoming 2022 elections. Part propaganda, part social commentary, meme culture is one surefire way for a political party to reach their intended online audience.
One visual making rounds on our feeds is this Game of Thrones-inspired fan art of presidential aspirant Bongbong Marcos and Davao Mayor Sara Duterte as Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, respectively. A potential political tandem has lingered for days, fueled by the latter’s recent visit to the former in Cebu.
For apologists and DDS alike, the caricature comes across as uplifting. According to a post, Marcos Jr. is the supposed ‘King of the North,’ while Sara Duterte is the ‘Queen of The South.’ The visual is the dream team-up for their fandoms, with the pair joining forces to sit on the ‘Iron Throne’ of Malacañang.
But for anyone who has seen Game of Thrones, the visual is pretty f*cked up.
Where do we start?
*Spoilers for Game of Thrones*
If Marcos Jr. ends up with the same fate as Jon Snow, he will spend 90% of his time admitting that he knows nothing. He is also a whipped sadboi who spouts ‘muh queen’ as he constantly defers to Daenerys. At the end of a long winding story, Marcos Jr. will end up exiled, so history kind of repeats itself.
As for Sara Targaryen, she has a mad tyrant as a father (*sips tea*). She becomes insane herself, burning the very people she’s supposed to protect. Bongbong Snow ends up backstabbing (or front stabbing) her to end the madness. Both never get to sit on the Throne.
Long story short, the poster above promises candidates where one is an incompetent exile, and another is a mad, genocidal queen who ends up dead. Yay for the Philippines, we guess?
