Are you not feeling yourself during this lockdown? Makoto Shinkai isn’t either. The acclaimed Japanese director recently shared his struggles in creating the follow-up to ‘Weathering With You’ on Twitter. Apparently, he’s having some sort of a creative slump.
‘We are assembling a new work little by little while keeping up with the pace of production of ‘Weathering With You’ three years ago’, read a translation of his post.
‘I don’t have the strength to imagine the story, characters, and visuals all at once. It’s been frustrating for the past couple of months, as if I was building it up a little bit and breaking it down again. It’s already early summer…’

Based on the tease, it seems that the project has been stuck for quite a while – 3 years to be exact – as it shows a May 15, 2017 timestamp. A few months prior, Shinkai revealed that he’s been constantly writing new works – even if he has no idea about the overall direction of the materials.
‘I’ve been writing screenplays for new movies over the last couple of months, and I’m not sure what to think about now, what to say, or what we want to see in a few years.
Even so, I write it anyway’, he laments.

It seems Makoto really is stuck in a creative rut. I think we speak for everyone when we say that there’s absolutely no pressure to rush from his audience, as his works have always been worth the wait.
