During the last leg of Pride Month, a peaceful pride protest in Mendiola was violently broken up today by the Philippine National Police (PNP).
A total of 20 people comprised of allies, drivers, and members of LGBT rights group ‘Bahaghari‘ and Gabriella were taken into police custody after gathering in a Pride Month protest against the pending Anti-Terrorism Bill.
The protestors maintain that they practiced social distancing while on the streets of Mendiola, as mass gatherings are still restricted in the country. Bahaghari spox Rey Valmores-Salinas also claims that they were arrested without disclosing violations.
As of writing, the arrested individuals are in Manila Police District awaiting charges while the hashtag #FREEPRIDE20 has been trending in call for their release.
