Pride Month ends with police arresting LGBTQ rallyists

The irony

During the last leg of Pride Month, a peaceful pride protest in Mendiola was violently broken up today by the Philippine National Police (PNP).

A total of 20 people comprised of allies, drivers, and members of LGBT rights group Bahaghari‘ and Gabriella were taken into police custody after gathering in a Pride Month protest against the pending Anti-Terrorism Bill.

The protestors maintain that they practiced social distancing while on the streets of Mendiola, as mass gatherings are still restricted in the country. Bahaghari spox Rey Valmores-Salinas also claims that they were arrested without disclosing violations.

‘Hanggang ngayon po wala paring pong sinasabi sa amin kung anong nailabag namin. Kasi malinaw na malinaw naman po na walang violations na i-incure… Nagkagulo lang nung pumasok ang kapulisan’.

As of writing, the arrested individuals are in Manila Police District awaiting charges while the hashtag #FREEPRIDE20 has been trending in call for their release.
