Talk about learning as it goes
Days after former National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) chief Dante Gierran was appointed as the new President of Philhealth, he admits that he doesn’t actually know ‘what is public health’.
Explaining that the health industry is far from his 27-year experience with NBI, Gierran shared with ANC that he has a lot to learn about actually helming the country’s leading health insurance company.
‘I’m scared because I don’t know the operations of PhilHealth…I don’t know about public health. I don’t know about that.’
Aside from the definition of terms, Gierran has a heavy task being appointed in the middle of PhilHealth’s PHP15B fraud allegations after Ricardo Morales resigned due to health reasons.
In a not-so unprecedented turn of events, Presidential Spox Harry Roque defended Gierran’s controversial statement by explaining that it’s his leadership skills that will lead the insurance corp back to the pvblic’s graces anyway.
‘Kanina po may nagsabi sa akin, di mo naman kinakailangan maging embalmer para maging manager ng isang memorial park. Hindi naman kinakailangan na talagang ikaw ay health expert para mapagana ang PhilHealth.’
‘Importante lang po siguro sa ngayon ay mawala ang korapsyon diyan nang sa ganun ay magamit ‘yung pondo ng PhilHealth para sa kalusugan ng lahat.’
Roque also said that Gierran is the country’s ‘best choice‘ to lead PhilHealth.
Aside from being entrusted by President Duterte himself, Gierran is also supported by former PhilHealth Morales, who shared that Gierran can learn ‘technical knowledge’ from staff while on the job.
‘It’s going to be a learning experience, getting to know the job, know the company, know the history of the organization, know the people inside. His worry will be navigating the organization.’
Wish we had that support system
