Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena is on a roll. After finishing at 11th place during a match at the recent Tokyo Games, he bounced back to second place and a new Philippine record at the Paris Diamond League. Shortly after, he bagged gold at the 2021 Golden Roof Challenge in Austria.
On Sunday, Filipino host Gretchen Ho posted a video of Obiena’s winning feat on Twitter. The caption reads, ‘EJ Obiena makes a successful 5.93m jump to shatter the more than 2 decades old 5.92m Asian record set by Kazakhstan’s Igor Potapovich.’
The world No. 5 already had the gold in his hands when other competitors bowed out after 5.80m, but he still aimed to clear 5.93m on his third and last try.

‘I wanted this so bad… I couldn’t have done it without all of you guys,’ said Obiena to the crowd after his record-breaking jump. Aside from setting a new Asian record, he broke his personal and national record of 5.91 that he earned in Paris last month.
Other winners during the men’s pole vault in Austria were USA’s Matt Ludwig who finished at second place after accomplishing 5.60m and Turkey’s Ersu Sasma who landed in third place with the same height clearance.
