Duolingo has become more than an app that’s threateningly reminding you to learn new languages.
Two individuals have actually found love in the app, out of all places—proof that you can find love anywhere.
Philippines-based Amanda downloaded Duolingo to learn new languages when she came across US-based Rob who, like, her was learning Mandarin.
Years after using the app, their paths crossed in 2021. Amanda started receiving notifications from Duolingo of someone congratulating her on her streak. She then sought this person out to reach out and eventually found him on Facebook.
“Are you the guy that keeps [congratulating] me on Duolingo?” she asked Rob in a chat. “Thank you, I try to keep going even when 💀 cos the cheers help.”
Rob answered, saying it was him and that he thought she could’ve been a bot.
Because of their distance and the COVID-19 pandemic, Rob and Amanda weren’t able to meet in person, but they continued to talk and form a bond.
“We’ve come quite a way, from calls to video chats to care packages sent halfway across the glob to virtual family introductions. And where are relationship is now will only continue to expand,” Rob said.
The two got married in 2022 in the Philippines with Duolingo-inspired multilingual greetings for the bridal party.
“I am still floored to this day that I met him on a language learning app. Who would have thought learning a language on a mobile app could bring you true love?” Amanda said.
As Duolingo shared their love story online, Twitter accounts of dating apps and internet users started chiming in about their unlikely tale.

And in tune with Duolingo’s threatening vibe, someone had to make a dark yet funny remark.
