ICYDK, The Philippines is the no.1 country in the world with the fastest growing HIV epidemic according to reports by UNAIDS.

Municipal Health Office of Bontoc in Mountain Province has installed a condom vending machine that sells a pack of condoms just for ₱2. Yep, you read that right.

These condoms are available for ₱2.00/pack which is way cheaper than the condoms sold in the market. Each pack contains three condoms that have flavours such as chocolate and vanilla.

The Department of Health (DOH) have also been implementing efforts in preventing further proliferation of HIV in the country and this includes giving Filipinos accessibility to affordable condoms.

DOH also promotes their A-B-C method to “avoid and prevent the transmission of Human Immune Virus – Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV-AIDS) and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) or Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

The acronym stands for Abstinence, Being faithful to one’s partner, and Correct and consistent usage of the condom.

Though the reception has been a mixed bag due to others’ conservative ideals, there’s no denying that giving people access to safe sex can surely reduce the country’s HIV crisis.

As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure – especially since there is no known cure for HIV-AIDS (yet.)
