Balenciaga’s recent projects like its partnership with Fortnite have been turning heads. Last Saturday, the label had another unexpected collab as it showed a 10-minute episode of The Simpsons characters walking down its runway during Paris Fashion Week. The short was part of its Spring/Summer 2022 collection.
The video opens with Homer Simpson convincing Balenciaga to send him the “cheapest thing” as he crams for Marge’s birthday. The fashion house sent over an extravagant couture dress worth $19,000 for her to borrow. They eventually returned it along with a letter where Marge gave her thanks to the label for allowing her to have “30 minutes of feeling just a little special.”
Moved by the note, Creative Director Demna Gvasalia invited the citizens of Springfield to walk the runway in Paris. Homer, Marge, and Lisa strutted on stage, while Bart even showed off his butt to the audience. The show also included Chief Clancy Wiggum, Moe Szyslak, Patty & Selma Bouvier, and twins Sherri & Terri, among others.
While Springfield residents graced the runway, the audience comprised of animated versions of Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, and Justin Bieber. But IRL, celebrities who first saw the video at the Théâtre du Châtelet included Cardi B, Offset, Elliot Page, Lewis Hamilton, Juergen Teller, Isabelle Huppert, and Naomi Campbell.
According to The Cut‘s fashion critic Cathy Horyn, ‘It was another way for Gvasalia to cement his position as the leading disrupter in fashion, and this time with the rarest commodity — a sense of humor.’
