This is not a drill!
HBO has ordered a pilot episode for a potential spinoff prequel to Game of Thrones, which could be greenlit to series.
Entertainment Weekly reports, “The network has released an official description of the show’s storyline, and it’s another tale spread across multiple locations and clans: Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”
Series Title and Airing Schedule
“The pilot doesn’t yet have a title. If greenlit to series, HBO has previously stated that no successor series will air until a year after GoT has its series finale. Since the eighth and final season of GoT is coming next year, the soonest we can see a successor series is 2020. If ordered to series, this will mark the first time in HBO’s history that the premium cable network has made a successor series to one of its shows.”
HBO tapped British screen writer Jane Goldman to co-create the series with original GoT author George R.R. Martin, and to serve as showrunner. Goldman wrote the screenplays of Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and the Kingsman films, as well as the scripts for the film adaptations of The Women in Black and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. The series marks her first time to be a TV showrunner.
Current GoT showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss will not be involved in this new series. Reports say that as soon as they wrap up the final season slated to be aired next year, the duo will start working on a new series of Star Wars films for Disney.
As the story of this spinoff takes place in a different timeline, the characters will be completely new and so the current GoT cast members are not expected to appear in it.
HBO said that the new series could start in the Age of Heroes, which in Martin’s books is said to have happened 10,000 years before the events in GoT. This bit of info is already fanning speculations and fan theories, but then again, as the released official description says, “… it’s not the story we think we know.”
