Filipinos are taking advantage of online selling to earn extra cash, including selling their pre-loved items online. But did you know that 60% of Filipinos are willing to sell their exes’ gifts and stuff? They’ve got hugot; and they’re making extra cash from it too.
The Carousell’s Valentine’s Day survey revealed that 58.9% Filipinos state they are willing to sell their ex’s items. Their top three motivations are to earn extra cash (35%), to declutter (34%), and to let go of the past (26%). Out of the 40% who are not willing to sell their ex’s gifts, 37% can’t let go of the memories associated to the item and 36% still find the items useful.
67% of those surveyed relate to hugots, and mostly share their hugots with friends and on social media. Interestingly, the hugot trend has also spread to online selling.
“We have seen a rising trend of users writing hugot captions with their items. There are 24,000 listings with the word ‘hugot’ in the desriptcion. According to Carousell’s internal data, these items are usually clothes (70%), soft toys (53%) and even luxury items (37%).” said Marita Galvez, Marketing Manager, Carousell Philippines.
One such seller is CeeCee (@thehugotseller) who sells her exes’ clothes with witty hugot captions. The process has not only helped her declutter but also to let go. “Selling my ex’s stuff has been a way for me to turn those items to my advantage. It helped me release my bitterness, have a little fun, and even earn from it.”
Moving on and moving forward
“At Carousell, our mission is to inspire the world to sell so they can fill their life with more meaningful experiences. This Valentine’s Day, we encourage all Filipinos to let go of their emotional and physical clutter.” shared Marita.
