The long-standing debate on whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie has been around for too long. There are actually other films that could fit into your holiday binge as these titles capture the ideal factors that are usually tied to the Christmas szn. These also bring out a sense of comfort and touch the topics of family, love, and maybe a little bit of snow.

As you grab a cup of hot choco and wear your fave oversized sweater, you can watch (or re-watch) the following films below that are a mix of everything – from international to local modern classics, as well as animated ones. You can also argue with your friends or family if these could really count as Christmas movies.

Big Hero 6

Why it will remind you of the holidays: The two things that could first come to mind are: 1) missing your siblings during Christmas; 2) Baymax technically looks like a giant snowman.

What’s the movie about? Disney Animation’s first Marvel comics adaptation tells the story of robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter) from the city of San Fransokyo. He encounters Baymax (Scott Adsit), a healthcare provider robot that his brother Tadashi left before passing away. Baymax and Hiro then create a superhero team with other individuals to beat a masked villain responsible for Tadashi’s death.

The Farewell

Why it will remind you of the holidays: You never know when your last Christmas will be with someone, and this movie somewhat encapsulates the feels.

What’s the movie about? The 2019 film follows Billi Wang (Awkwafina), a girl from a Chinese-American household who learns that her grandmother Nai Nai (Zhao Shu-zhen) only has a short time to live because of lung cancer. Their family decided it’s best not to tell the matriarch about her condition and throws a fake wedding as a cover-up to say goodbye.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Why it will remind you of the holidays: This will make you remember moments how a stranger eventually turns into someone you treat like family. Who knew that they’re the ones you’ll end up sharing kwentos with?

What’s the movie about? The action-adventure movie follows 21-year-old insurance worker Tim Goodman (Justice Smith), the son of a detective who went mysteriously missing. He then meets his father’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) and they joined forces to figure out the truth behind the investigator’s disappearance.

High School Musical

Why it will remind you of the holidays: If your Christmas feels malamig since you’re single, Troy and Gabriella’s meet-cute scene gives you hope to meet ‘the one’ before the year ends.

What’s the movie about? The high school star athlete Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) meets the new transfer student Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) at a holiday karaoke party, where they sang Start of Something New. After their Christmas break, Troy and Gabriella audition for the upcoming school musical. Meanwhile, the school’s queen bee Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) plots something to ruin their chances of performing.

Four Sisters and A Wedding

Why it will remind you of the holidays: No holiday comes without drama. But after all of the fights and misunderstandings, your family still has your back – especially your siblings. This can also be an ode to your fave ate or bunso.

What’s the movie about? This classic local film follows four sisters namely Bobbie (Bea Alonzo), Teddie (Toni Gonzaga), Gabbie (Shaina Magdayao), and Alexandra (Angel Locsin) attempts to stop the wedding of their younger brother CJ (Enchong Dee). But as they try to talk him out of it, they ended up facing issues that they buried for a long time.

Coraline

Why it will remind you of the holidays: You shouldn’t take for granted the time you spend with your parents. Even if you encounter a few disagreements sometimes, you know that you can never turn back time once they’re gone.

What’s the movie about? An 11-year-old girl named Coraline Jones (Dakota Fanning) moved to a new town in Oregon. In their new apartment, she found a secret door that transports her to an alternate world that mirrors a better version of her own – or so she thought. She was excited about her discovery until the Other Mother (Teri Hatcher) tries to keep her captive there forever. The animated film was based on Neil Gaiman’s 2002 novel of the same name.

Twilight

Why it will remind you of the holidays: Apart from the movie’s overall chilly vibe because of the snow and rain, it will remind you of how it’s that time of the year when you usually meet your SO’s family, who sometimes are subject to their unusual ‘quirks’.

What’s the movie about? Twilight is the first out of the five films that make up the saga. It was based on Stephanie Meyer’s fantasy romance book series of the same name. The 2008 film presents a teenager Isabella “Bella” Swan (Kristen Stewart) who moves to Forks, Washington to live with her father. Everything seemed ordinary until she falls in love with a vampire named Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).

Hello, Love, Goodbye

Why it will remind you of the holidays: Beyond the romance, the flick could remind you of OFWs friends and relatives who sacrifice being separated from loved ones just to earn a living.

What’s the movie about? The film follows the complicated journey of Filipino workers Joy (Kathryn Bernardo) and Ethan (Alden Richards) based in Hong Kong. Ethan is a bartender who wants to romantically win over Joy, a domestic helper who tries to make ends meet to support her family. Unfortunately, they both have different plans for their future but still try to figure out how to make it work.

PAKI

Why it will remind you of Christmas: It’s safe to say that Christmas isn’t always a “happy” occasion. Sometimes, it could be a time where things get messy in the family.

What’s the movie about? The film shows Alejandra (Dexter Doria), a 70-year-old woman, who decides to leave her husband who constantly cheated on her during their five decades of marriage. However, their children refuse to agree on their separation. Paki in Filipino means both “please” and “care”, and it’s kind of the main sentiment that the characters are asking for.

If I Stay

Why it will remind you of the holidays: Discounting the snowy mornings, the main character lying in bed all day probably resembles your main agenda during the upcoming Christmas break.

What’s the movie about? The novel-turned-film centers around a young and talented cellist named Mia Hall (Chloë Grace Moretz). Her dilemma was deciding between following her dreams and going to Julliard or being with her rock guitarist boyfriend Adam (Jamie Blackley). But things changed when her family got into a car accident, where she was the only survivor.
