The 52-week Money Challenge that can help you save over Php 130,000

It’s hard to save.

It isn’t an easy thing to do when you’re in your 20s. You have all the responsibilities of a premature adult (because, of course, being in your 20s doesn’t automatically mean you’re that mature), with little to save given your measly monthly paycheck and this infinitely expensive money-oriented world.

But there is a chance for us.

Rhea Mocorro, the Kuripot Pinay, localized the 52-week Money Challenge for the Philippines and took it on in 2014. She managed to save over Php 60,000 by the end of the year.

I tried the 20 peso increment for 52 weeks and saved over P27,560.

How?

The 52-week Money Challenge basically lets you save in peso increments weekly.

For your reference, it’s like this.

You want to save 50 pesos on your first week, then next week, you double the amount, stowing away 100 pesos. By the third week, you triple the amount you started off with in your piggy bank, and so on for the succeeding weeks.

Simple?

Well, at first it’s simple. The numbers aren’t as big and you think it’s just a walk in a park and all that.

It’s a bit like a walk in the park without having your favorite cookies and cream icecream in your hand for your eating pleasure.

Tips to help you overcome the challenge

Check out Rhea’s tips on how you’ll get through the whole year saving up.

A goal.

Keep motivated on saving. Think of something you’d want to save for which you can’t right now. Want that brand new car? Or those new sick white kicks? Or just a plane ticket to anywhere? Save up.

Piggy bank.

You can use basically anything to store away your saving. I put mine in a little black box. This is your grownup piggy bank. It’s better to use a covered one, then it won’t tempt you to check out how much you’ve already got.

Template. The challenge has a template which challengers can print out and tape in their piggy banks or save it on your phones. The Asian Parent took the liberty to edit the dollars to turn it into Philippine Pesos.

One vital tip?

Don’t use the money you’ve put in your grownup piggy bank.

You put it there for a reason. Now, if you’re just going to take the lid off and get right down to your savings for that new game you just saw, what’s the point, right? So, maybe put a little note inside, something that’ll help you think twice on getting your money. Maybe MC Hammer’s You Can’t Touch This will suffice.

Now, to the fun part.
