David Bowie’s moment in ‘Perks of Being a Wallflower’ will always be the pvblic’s favorite

We The Pvblic

This week marks both the birth and passing of legendary vanguard David Bowie and it’s about time we honor his moment in Perks of Being a Wallflower.

In case you guys haven’t seen Stephen Chbosky’s 2012 coming-of-age film, it shows the life of Charlie (played by Logan Lerman) as he enters freshman year of high school. He meets two seniors played by Ezra Miller and Emma Watson who shows him how to truly live life with a smile (even if Ezra Miller’s Patrick got a C, or as they like to call it, “below average”).

After a party, Charlie hitches a ride with Sam (Emma Watson) and Patrick (Ezra Miller). As they cruise through the night, Bowie’s “Heroes” plays on the radio. Sam begs Patrick to drive through the tunnel because “it’s the perfect song.”

And just like that, they drove through the tunnel with Sam standing on the back of the pickup with her arms open wide, just like Rose in “Titanic”. As Charlie stared on in sheer awe, he said three words which became the most memorable line in the film:

As it happened, Bowie’s lyrics “Oh we can be heroes, just for one day” was echoing through that tunnel, making the scene even more iconic.

We don’t know about you, but every time this scene goes on, we get goosebumps. It shows you to live in the now and just enjoy every bit of the present and all that it can give because at least for one day, you could be a hero. It could all be gone the next day.

To celebrate the life of one of the greatest creative forces the world has known, we present the This Is: David Bowie Spotify playlist for you to hear more of his music:
