Vogue cover shoot leads to Princess Diana’s iconic bob

Hairstylist Sam McKnight reveals that he had no plans of cutting Princess Diana’s hair to a bob.

In a Vogue cover shoot in the 90s, McKnight styled the royal’s hair by tucking her locks into her tiara, creating a faux bob. To his surprise, the Princess of Wales wanted to keep the hairstyle after her editorial shoot.

“I made her hair look short in the tiara for the shoot and she decided she liked it. As she was leaving, Diana asked what would I do to her hair if I had free rein… I suggested cutting it short, and she, to my surprise, agreed, and we did it there and then.” McKnight writes in his new book “Hair by Sam McKnight.”

Diana’s layered short hair has since been a popular hairdo, especially in that decade.

The princess’ former makeup artist also shares that Diana was fearless with sporting new beauty looks. Mary Greenwell says she “loved makeup and loved experimenting. It was just much more about really getting her to look absolutely beautiful all the time.”

Now we can’t help but think of getting a haircut.
