UK news company The Sun has revealed that pop star Ariana Grande is slated to return to Broadway to play Elphaba in Wicked, one of the biggest shows currently running.
No official press release has been posted on the show’s website, but if this true, Ariana will be making one of her dreams come true. She told Seth McFarlane that she was eyeing the role when she joined him in Apple’s Carpool Karaoke series in August of last year.
“This is a huge feat for Ariana,” a source told The Sun. “The role of Elphaba is one of the most coveted parts to play on Broadway. Only a very select group of actresses have been chosen over its 13-year run and Ariana is in talks to take the gig. Bosses believe she’s got the acting talent to take it on and think it’s a bonus that her pop star appeal can pull in fresh audiences.”
Ariana is no stranger to the Great White Way. Prior to becoming a bankable pop star, she made her Broadway debut in the 2008 musical “13.”
Wicked is a magical and splashy show that tells the story of the unlikely friendship between Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. The musical is now the seventh longest-running show in Broadway history. The role of Elphaba was originally played by “Let it go” singer Idina Menzel, for which she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
Ariana clearly has some big shoes to fill, but who’s excited to hear her belt out “Defying Gravity”?
